Since Massachusetts post -rockers Caspian’s beginnings in the early years of this century the band have released three studio albums, and a small cache of live, split or stand alone EPs. They have steadily forged an impressive live reputation on the back of touring extensively, particularly around their native US and across Europe. This year sees the guys head Down Under for the first time and they landed recently after completing a series of shows in Asia and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Philip Jamieson took time out from his quest to catch up on sleep and put on hold his search for the perfect pizza to answer a few questions for us. After winning three Grammy awards over the past few years and spending more time in the spotlight than the average dance music artist, it feels strange to be reviewing his debut. But is it all its cracked up to be? Is the hype justified?

If you are a Game of Thrones fan or even a mildly interested rap fan you should probably grab this offering. Not only is it pretty good for what it sets out to achieve, but its also 100% free. Sure I could be cynical and say it’s a marketing exercise (and it is) or focus on the rather pointed reason for releasing the mixtape (HBO doesn’t have enough African American’s watching the show) but I can’t help but admire the thought, because in this case; the thought really does count. Catch The Throne is a purchase worthy album and will keep every fan of both hip-hop and Game of Thrones happy for at least the next couple of weeks while they wait for the return of season 4.

Pharrell Williams is obsessed with women. Its like every song he writes is meant to be for the ladies to swoon and faint to, as if, by some incredible measure, his pseudo-misogyny and sexism under the guise of infatuation is the new “black”. Far from it in fact, with every note of this album making me wonder whether the boy has ever left the man, or more importantly, has the boy never become a real man?

Sometimes you hear a band and you just know its going to be awesome before you even hear anything. Sometimes it’s the label, sometimes it’s the hype. Other times; it’s the pedigree. The Nerve fall into the latter category. With a lineup of three members from three of Australia’s best live rock bands and arguably one of the best guitarists in the world; I didn’t even have to hear it to know it was great. But, for the purpose of letting you in on the secret; I’ll indulge. Featuring One part Cog, One part Mammal, one part Pre Shrunk and one very large part guitar demon, The Nerve are one for the list of bands to hear/see in 2014. At the end of last year, they released their debut album and despite a very silent appearance, ‘Audiodacity’ is fucking explosive.
