Yes, it’s that time of year again; when objectivity goes out the window and I select my esteemed top ten albums of the year. Forget chin stroking analysis, these are the albums which made my hair stand on end… gave me goosebumps… made me belt out the lyrics and madly air-drum/air-guitar with impunity!

Mutation- Error 500
By Stewart
There’s been a bit of a trend recently towards metal supergroups (the heavy music community is practically salivating at the prospect of Killer Be Killed), but Mutation is one that may slip under the radar. Well I’m gonna do my best to see that it doesn’t. Read more…
Bane Of Winterstorm- The War of Shadows I: The Last Sons of Perylin
By Stewart
…too many bands are guilty of genre-dodging these days, erroneously and conceitedly claiming to be a completely new style unto themselves. Well that ain’t the case with Bane of Winterstorm. Their Facebook page announces proudly that they’re symphonic power metal and… well if a job’s worth doing it’s worth doing properly. Read more…

Jimblah – Phoenix
By Andrew
The latest addition to the Elefant Traks roster of Australia Hip Hop creators is one of their finest. Not the usual straight hip-hop producer/performer, Jimblah is somewhat of an anomaly. After winning the inaugural Hilltop Hoods Initiative in 2007, the Adelaide based rapper is not a fresh new kid on the scene. Ranging sometimes from soul and blues to spoken word bush poetry and beyond; ‘Phoenix’ is a revelation in Australian Hip-hop. Interested?

Lee Emcee – Heads Up, Pens Down
By Andrew
Sounding like early Lyrical Commission or Certified Wise beginnings, ‘Heads Up, Pens Down’ reminds me very much of early Strut and Simplex stuff harking back to the golden era (not the Hilltop label) days of the mid to late nineties in Australian hip-hop when artists found their accents and really started to evolve from the stereotypical image of the BBQ rap scene. But from Lee’s very iconic oz hip-hop voice, the guesting begins and shapes what is ultimately a true diamond in the rough. Read On…
